Web Standards

Lewis University recognizes the importance of establishing and maintaining the World Wide Web as a means of promoting the institution and as an academic resource. The University also recognizes the importance of a professional and uniform World Wide Web structure, adhering to the University Mission statement and standards of honesty and personal conduct. The University has established the following policies for publishing on the Â鶹´«Ã½ website.

PAGE CLASSIFICATION

TYPE 1 PAGES

Departmental Web Pages, Academic and Administrative Support Units.
It is vital that all departments in this classification have a presence on the public website.Type 1 pages must be developed in collaboration with the Webmaster.

The University website has been developed to provide a consistent look that follows University brand standards, and intuitive navigation between pages that follows current best practices in web design and development, and ensures a consistent user experience. These pages will determine the basic structure of the site and will contain text from official University publications and content written in collaboration with University departments. All Type 1 pages are subject to approval by the University Webmaster.

Departments are responsible for maintaining the content of their own Web pages. This approach allows the department to control the timeliness and accuracy of information. When  site updates are complete and ready to be posted, the department must contact the Webmaster to request that the updated information be published to the live Internet. Web updates will be published within seven days of receipt. Development of timelines for new Web pages and sites will be developed on a project-by-project basis. The ultimate responsibility of departmental copy lies with the administrative head of that unit.

Examples:

TYPE 2 PAGES

Organizational Web Pages.
Entities officially sanctioned by the University – University programs, offices, organizations, and student groups recognized by the Office of Student Activities – should have a place on the University website. Individuals are encouraged to construct and maintain Type 2 pages in support of University activities, in collaboration with the University Webmaster. Detailed descriptions of organization activities that do not pertain to the public should be posted on the myLewis intranet as a resource for current students, faculty and staff.

Type 2 pages will be maintained by the department or organization. Once content has been updated the Webmaster should be notified. The ultimate responsibility of content lies with the organization unit head. In the case of student organizations, all information must be approved by the Office of Student Activities.

Example: /studentservices/fitnesscenter/clubsports/esports.htm

Course Pages
Detailed descriptions of course syllabi and assignments should be posted on the Blackboard LMS as a resource for current students, faculty and staff.

Course pages will be maintained by the faculty in conjunction with the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning.

TYPE 3 PAGES

Faculty and Student Web Pages and Individual Department Web Pages.
Pages that are not directly related to teaching or other official University activities are designated as Type 3 pages. These are interest-oriented pages  initiated by current faculty or students. In certain cases there may be reasons for departments to have a Type 3 supplemental web page to highlight student and faculty projects. Type 3 pages are not part of the University’s official website. Each Web creator bears sole responsibility for the content and maintenance of the Web files. These pages should not duplicate content on the main University website, or direct traffic away from the main University website. Type 3 department pages must provide a link back to the main University website.

Type 3 Web pages will be housed on the www2.lewisu.edu Web server or a subdomain of lewisu.edu. The www2 server is  housed within Computer Science and subdomains are acquired through the Office of Information Technology.
